The Pygmy Hippopotamus (
Choeropsis liberiensis) is a native to Africa. True to its name, it is only half the size of its cousin the "true" Hippopotamus (
Hippopotamus amphibius). Still, an adult Pygmy Hippo could reach 1.8 metres in length and 180 kilograms in weight. These two chubby fellas are enjoying a lazy afternoon nap in their enclosure in the Singapore Zoo.
Unlike the endangered Bengal Tigers, Pygmy Hippos are relatively safe from extinction, perhaps largely because they are unpopular targets of poachers. This does not make them invulnerable, however, as their natural habitats – forests and swamps of Western Africa – are very fragile and cannot be readily renewed.
This is also an opportunity to say Happy Valentine's to all those out there who are not alone. Good things come in pairs, as the Chinese saying goes. So treasure the one you love who loves you. May happiness be with you always. :)
